Veteran Headstones & Markers
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides headstones, markers, and medallions to memorialize eligible veterans. These may be placed in any cemetery — not only national or state veterans cemeteries.
What Is Available?
The VA provides government-furnished headstones and markers for eligible veterans buried in national, state, tribal, or private cemeteries. A medallion is also available for eligible veterans whose graves are already marked with a privately purchased headstone.
Types of Markers
Government-furnished markers are available in several styles, including upright granite or marble markers, flat granite or marble markers, flat bronze markers, and niche markers for cremated remains. The style available depends on the cemetery's requirements.
Who Is Eligible?
Eligible veterans include those who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Spouses and dependents buried in a national cemetery may also be eligible for a marker.
How to Apply
Applications for government-furnished headstones and markers are submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Taps2's licensed funeral professionals can assist families in understanding the application process and what documentation is required.
Government-furnished headstones and markers are a benefit administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. They are not a Taps2 program. Eligibility is determined solely by the VA. Taps2 provides educational information and professional assistance — it does not administer VA benefits.
